I would like to acknowledge the many organizations and community leaders that have come together to celebrate Nowruz – the spring festival of the New Year. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued dedication towards building a strong, united and pluralistic Canada.
Nowruz is a time of profound significance for many Canadians – a time of year to reflect on the past, think about the future, and give thanks for the good fortune and the many gifts that we have in our lives. The many customs associated with this celebration, including the spring cleaning, the setting of the Haft Sîn table and visiting one another, are opportunities for all Canadians to share in the traditions of this wonderful annual event and experience the great joy of living in a multicultural society.
Nowruz, as the embodiment of the unity of cultural heritage and centuries-long traditions, plays a significant role in strengthening the ties among peoples based on mutual respect and the ideals of peace and good neighbourhood. As the Member of Parliament for Thornhill where the Persian Community is growing, I am keenly aware of the importance that celebrations such as Nowruz have in bringing together communities and fostering a spirit of friendship among the many pieces of our cultural mosaic. Canadian diversity is a fundamental characteristic of our society and we are committed to preserving and enhancing our multicultural heritage while working to achieve economic, social, cultural and political equality for all of us.
I wish all of you a happy, healthy and successful New Year.
Sincerely,
The Honourable Peter Kent, P.C., M.P.
Member of Parliament for Thornhill
Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas)
