The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today issued the following statement in response to the destruction wrought by Tropical Storm Agatha in Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, and Honduras:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to the people of Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, and Honduras as they contend with the terrible effects of Tropical Storm Agatha. It is absolutely heart wrenching to see people suffer from circumstances beyond their control.
“With at least 179 confirmed dead and tens of thousands of others driven from their homes, the storm has delivered a devastating blow to the region, exacting a particularly dreadful toll in Guatemala because of the eruption of Pacaya.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Government of Canada are with the victims as they mourn their loved ones and seek to rebuild their lives.”
